Virus Alert Notification on the taskbar, how can I remove?

I had this continuous on / off flashes of a point question mark in a circle and it flashes a red "prohibited" CONTINUE symbol type. I can not get rid of him. I ran virus scan as, adware scans, etc, but everything indicates that my computer is fine. I even went to microsoft.com to try deleted. Nothing works. When I click on the virus alert, its been an advertisement for some types of syware. So every few minutes or it will show notificatio huge box that keeps me from being able to type after its done flashing to explain, "Your computer may be infected …."
