The Trojan War – mythological background: A level Classic Civilization

Most of us have seen the movie Troy and heard Trojan horse, but how much is based on the myth of origin? This article tells the story of Achilles, the battle and ultimately the fall Trojan.

The origin of the Trojan War is a distant and mythical past, culminating from a series of incidents. First, Zeus, king of the gods, saw and immediately fell in love with the sea nymph Thetis. Thetis was the subject of a prophecy troubling, however, this prophecy warned that his firstborn son, would grow up to be bigger than his father. Zeus was never a god who may be a prophecy come true, he usurped the position of Cronos himself and was not about to see the same thing happens to him, but I wanted to Thetis. In an attempt to cheat fate, he made a mortal man, King Peleus to fall in love with the shape change of the sea nymph Thetis, and they married soon after. The couple forgot to invite a rather important goddess, Eris, the goddess of Discord. Eris was deeply offended by this apparent snub and threw a golden apple among the guests on which were engraved the words: "the most beautiful." Seeing this golden apple Hera, wife Zeus and his two daughters, Athena and Aphrodite immediately began squabbling about who should rightfully own the apple. The argument lasted for several years in the esteem of man.

While the argument was going on, the couple recently married had a son, a boy who later became the great hero Achilles (and prophecy in the process). There was a second prophecy too, however, it predict early death of the child. To protect the boy, Thetis took him into the underworld where she bathed in the Styx, this River apparently has the power to confer immortality on those who came in contact with him. The reputation of the river was justified and Achilles become immortal, everyone except for her healing as she held it overwhelmed the boy. So it became the only vulnerable spot of his body and, finally, was the cause of his death.

While Thetis tried to protect her son, another boy was born in Troy of Priam, King and Queen Hecuba. Shortly before the birth of the child, however, Hecuba had a dream in which she gave birth to a torch lit, which was later interpreted by the seers say that his son would cause the destruction of the city and must be killed immediately after birth. King Priam agree, but nobody has been able to execute the order on such an innocent child. The boy was names Paris, younger brother of Hector.

Priam rose to a handsome young man, and the prophecy has apparently been long forgotten, at least in the world of men. The three goddesses were still explaining to him what was the best of them, however. To settle this argument once for all, Zeus decided to make Paris choose between them. Each of the goddesses offer a bribe to Paris to choose her: Hera offers him power over all of Europe and Asia, Athena offers wisdom and victory in every battle, while Aphrodite offered him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris chose Aphrodite after learning that the woman in question was so beautiful, and immediately received the love of Helen of Sparta. Helen was Unfortunately for Paris and Troy, the wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta. After being snubbed the contest, defeated goddesses swear eternal enmity towards Paris and Troy and begin plotting against him.

Helen and Priam flee to Troy together, to be quickly followed by a declaration of war Menelaus. Agamemnon's brother Menelaus, king of Greece, immediately began to gather a coalition force and sailed for Asia Minor, the location of Troy (modern Turkey). Prophecy comes again and they are warned that they will succeed in their adventure, they have the support of Achilles. Achilles was hidden so successfully by his mother that the Greeks could not not find him, and Odysseus, King of the island of Ithaca, was in charge of research. Odysseus, like Achilles, was something of a reluctant here for the Greeks, but was finally convinced to engage in the campaign.

Ulysses was famous throughout the Greek world for the ruse, and that is what the Greeks needed most on the campaign. He quickly demonstrated this trick when he finds Achilles. Thetis had succeeded in hiding on the island of Skyros, and took the extraordinary decision to disguise himself as a girl, brought up among the women of the island. Odysseus sailed Skyros, pretending to be a trader, on his arrival he began to praise his wares to women of the island, but among the goods exposed, such as jewelry, jewelry and household items, he concealed a sword. While women (and Achilles) looked over the goods, Odysseus' men launched a surprise (false) attack against the palace. Achilles, his heroic character get the better of him, grabbed the sword and made to defend the palace, and reveal itself. When it was discovered, he was conscripted to fight for the Greeks.

The Greeks composed of individual heroes and kings each with their own personal armies, made their way to Troy and began the famous siege decade. After defeat, Troy was razed to the ground, the men were killed and women and children sold into slavery.
