Trojan Horse Troy

What are the main differences between the movie Troy(2004) and the epic The Illiad?

What are the main differences between the movie Troy(2004) and the epic The Illiad.
Or The movie and what really happened?

The only thing I can determine is that they really condensed the movie. The Trojan war lasted 10 years. The movie makes it seem like 2 weeks went by.
Another difference I can see is that Odysseus didn’t have a big part about making the Trojan horse. Wasn’t it his idea?

1) Nowhere in the Iliad does Achilles show disrespect for any of the Gods, whereas in the movie he constantly disrespects them both in speech and in cutting off Apollo’s statue head off when arriving in Troy.

2) Most of the Gods of the pantheon (the 12 Olympian Gods) are active in the book whereas the movie mostly refers only to Apollo and even then not as an active God.

3) The Iliad spans only 24 days of the 10 year war. The prelude to the war and the arrival at Troy – as well as the Trojan horse and the destruction of the city are not mentioned in the Iliad, at least not in the present tense. It does list where all the ships came from.

4) “The wrath of Achilles” is really toned down in the movie. My wife and I are real Iliad fans and I said, and my wife agreed, “Can you believe how much they watered down Achilles? He was almost a philosopher…”

5) They condensed Briseis, Cryseis, and Cassandra (of the Iliad) (3 different women) into Briseis of the movie.

6) Neither Agamemnon nor Menelaus were killed during the war, both survived the war according to the Iliad and the Odyssey.

7) I recall nothing of any escape tunnel for the key women and children to escape with. In fact, according to the Odyssey, Menelaus returns to Sparta with Helen and she becomes the Queen of Troy again. Agamemnon takes Cassandra home as a concubine.

8) There is no reference to the plague in Book 1 of the Iliad which precipitates the arguement between Achilles and Agamemnon.

9) There is no real reference, in the Iliad, of Odysseus and Achilles being friends. They respected each other, to be sure, but there is no reason to see them as being as close as in the movie. In fact, Odysseus always sided with Agamemnon.

I’m sure I could think of more differences if I tried.

One additional point. I think that the movie made it clear that the Trojan Horse was Odysseus’ idea.
