Can a computer virus do this?

I went on google n i found an image but google says that it took it off but it didn’t say why so i took whatever key words i could find n i went ta the site directly so i find the image file i click on it my computer reacts ta it n my firewall says hey i blocked somethin! so i clicked on my firewall tab n i found that it was an HTML type virus..so from that i am asking can ya get a virus by just clicking on an image on the internet? but i know that the computer basically downloads the image once ya click it n saves it as browsing history right? so from this people can embed virus’s in any formated image? But not as trojan horse er bloodhound 13 exploit(even though that’s more like a image coding error)??
