what is making my computer act so slow? help! (XP)?

i havent used my computer (runs on xp) in a little over a month and when i turned it on it stayed on the windows xp screen for more than 5 minutes then it loaded up like normal, all my desktop and whatnot but when i try to open any type of file the computer just starts acting really slow and it freezes on me. i ran malware and found one virus so i deleted it and restarted my computer again but its still acting slow
i dont know what else to do
can anyone help?
