Why does Microsoft Excel keep giving me a Macro error window when I have no Macros recorded?

I have a spreadsheet I have been using for quite some time now and this is just getting annoying. There are no macros recorded in any of the workbooks where this message is popping up. Each time I open a particular type of sheet a message pops up asking me if I want to enable or disable the macros. The problem is – there aren’t any of them to enable or disable! I can’t delete something that isn’t there to stop the window from popping up either.

Try this…

- Alt+F11 to open the VBA macro editor
- In the VBAProject window (in the upper left) there is a “tree” view. Look for something like Modules Module1
- Double click on Module1 and make sure it’s empty. This is where your deleted macros use to be.
- Right click on Module1 and select “Remove Module1″
- Answer NO to the “Do you want to Export Module1″ question.
- If you have more than one module e.g. Module2 etc., delete those as well.
- Close the VBA editor
- Re-save your workbook

Modules are created when you record a macro but they are not deleted when you delete the macro. The presence of a module (even if it’s empty) causes that Enable-Disable macros message.
