Where can I get a Free Anti-virus Program

Is there anywhere i can get a good anti-virus software for free that will actually remove threats instead of just scan for them. Because most free anti-virus softwares only scan for viruses but it tells you that you have to buy them to get the threats removed.

A very good, free anti-virus available to download is AVG 8 Anti-virus:

Both are free, as powerful as paid programs, like Norton and McAfee, and don’t use up as many resources.
Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.
