My friend’s computer has been working fine for ages, but today when she tried to turn it on she got the error message, “Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM”.

Try doing a system restore back to the date when it was working fine as that will put the computer back to how it was before this problem happened. You can do a system restore by holding down F8 on start up and when it comes up with the option of ‘last known configuation’ highlight and enter do a system restore.
