what is the best FREE program that i can put on my comp. to fight and protect against viruses, adware,spyware?

I have AVG 8.0 right now and its not working right so I want to take it off and put something better that will work and has a history of not breaking down like my AVG has done. Hopefully I can download it from the internet for free and it would be great if it could protect my comp. from viruses (and to fight against viruses if one is on my comp.), spyware, and adware.

i like avast 4.0 home edition i hae used it for years and have tried a few other ones but i like avast the best
