Anti Virus Software For Macbook
Is there a way of doing a disk cleanup on a MacBook?

I am fairly new to using a Mac as my main computer. I just started using one the past 5 months or so, it is a Mac OS X Version 10.4.8, and it has been fine so far. Lately though it has been running awfully slow, when I click to open my Word program for example, it honestly takes up to a minute for it to fully load….verrrry slow compared to the Dell laptop I used before. I had the Dell for over two years and it never got nearly as slow as my Mac. However, when the Dell would get a little slow, I would just do a quick disk cleanup or defragment and it would run a bit faster. Any suggestions?

Also, I hear that with Macs, you are less liable to get viruses and it is not highly recommended that you get an anti-virus software. Therefore, I do not have one, and others I know who do say they don’t even need it, or so they think. It is suggested I get one?

most of the WINDOZE advice you will get just does not apply!

you need virus protection, to protect you from the ZERO viruses out there in the wild.

you can clean up and re-fresh your mac by getting rid of programs that run all the time! do you run a browser all day long, 3 email accounts, 1000 rss feeds, a background webserver, and stream digital video thru your mac whenever you use the mac??? I DO! but after an install of some crappy ‘app’ my mac fell to its knees!

I took everything that it had installed (all over my system in typical unix/windows style) off… and MAC was back to it’s normal happy state!

there is no need for defragging, the disk system does it by itself!

Of course if you run windows under bootcamp or other… all pc advice applies!

Antivirus software is a key security technology on todays end user systems. Current antivirus engines use two complementary techniques to detect malware. One is to statically scan potential malware sample files for certain patterns which are known ( malware signatures ). The other is to dynamically detect typical malicious behavior (e.g., modifications of registry keys, DLL injections etc.) upon execution of a sample. No antivirus product can reliably detect malware. Rather, all products are plagued by false positives and false negatives. An interesting approach to improve the reliability of detection is to run several antivirus products on a given malware sample. There are several online scanning services, that implement this approach. However, for performance reasons these services only use the static signature detection functionality of the anti virus products, and thus do not take advantage of the full functionality of current antivirus engines. This book explains how to overcome this limitation and to build an efficient online malware scanning service that fully utilizes the capabilities of current antivirus engines.
