What is the BEST free anti virus software available for download?

There is a ton of software available and it takes forever to download via dial up, only to find out the SCAN is free BUT the FIX costs $$$. Is there decent software that is actually FREE? Thanks.

AVG is NOT the best one. If you pay, yeah, maybe… but the free version has been crippled. It can not do a boot-scan, it can not detect root kits and it can not remove Trojans.

Besides that… AVG is considering dropping the free scanner altogether.

With that said:

Either Avira or Avast can do all these things; they hardly take up system resources, and they update whenever a new definition file is available.
