Would i be hacker safe under about three layers of firewall protection plus anti – virus software ?

I’ve got about three layers of firewall protection, the firewall on my dsl modem with the firewall on my wireless router and the software firewall that came with my anti-virus software. I’ve heard people said that a hardware firewall is a little safer. So do you guys think that i am hacker proof and safe from hackers ? I got some valueable pictures of me and my girlfriend in my computer that i don’t want anyone to steal. I got a couple of people who used to be family members and relatives that are now haters and they hate my family a lot and they’re trying their best to get information and news about us. Do you think i am hacker safe with three layers of firewalls ? All of them are turned on at the moment and are working.

Properly configuring multiple firewalls can be quite complicated, and costly. One properly configured and monitored firewall would provide much better security than three hastily thrown together setups. It sounds like you’re throwing more “brute force” at just one aspect of the problem, which would imply that you haven’t looked at all the potential holes that an attacker could (if they were motivated enough) pursue.

Nothing online is secure. Here’s a true story. I walked a friend of mine through securing his PC. We installed his Anti-Virus, both a hardware and software Firewall, Shut down unnecessary services, and patched a few programs that had known vulnerabilities. I would not have been able to “break through” his network now, but I asked him to check out a “cool game” I found online. I emailed it to him and without thinking, he ran it, which installed a small trojan I had prepared on his system. Despite all his security, I convinced him to bypass all that work and breach his system.

In your situation, what if someone broke into your house and took the physical computer? I would guess this is more likely for a disgruntled family member than learning how to bypass security protocols of a firewall or computer system.

If you have files on your PC that you want to keep private, there’s a few things you should think about, and by think about, I mean do:

1. Keep ALL your software (Operating System, Browsers, Anti-Virus, etc..) patched with the latest updates. New vulnerabilities are discovered and released online every day. Manufacturers try to patch them quickly, but there’s often a few-day period when many systems are vulnerable.

2. A single Hardware firewall (Router) and a Software Firewall on the PC are more than adequate. The router will block most incoming connections, and the software firewall will protect the PC from being compromised by other infected computers on the same network. Some firewalls will even contain malware that was executed locally from creating an outbound connection. Learn how TCP/IP works and understand which connections are safe and which could allow an attacker a path into your network/system.

3. Encrypt anything that’s critical/confidential. This is a must. Check out Truecrypt. An open source/FREE crypto package (http://www.truecrypt.org). Use strong passwords and strong encryption.

4. If it doesn’t need to be online, Encrypt it (yes I’m repeating this) and Save it offline (USB Drives/CDs/etc). Store sensitive materials in a safe place (like a safe or in a bank safety deposit box.)
