Does Adaware (the actual programme itself) install spyware onto your computer?

I have Avast (anti-virus) but no anti-spyware programme on my laptop.

QUESTION 1 – Must all laptops have an anti-virus + anti-spyware programme?

Someone said that Adaware is rubbish and that I should not install it. He’s a computer genius and always knows what he’s talking about so thats why im confused because all the reviews online say its good.

QUESTION 2 – if i install Adaware, will it also install spyware or any other unwanted programmes?

But from past experience, Windows Defender doesnt do anything. It only tells you when your programmes get out-of-date.

Or am I wrong? What else does it do?

When downloaded and installed from Ad-aware’s own site, it is safe. However, there are other sites which offer versions of it that have been hacked and had spyware added (and the program altered to not detect them.) But this is true of EVERY free program on the Internet. Always get the program from the original site, or through a trusted service like CNET’s download.com.

Ad-aware was one of the better scanners on the market. But since they released a paid version they have not kept the free version running up to par. It is now only a so-so scanner (unless you buy it.)

Instead try Malwarebyte from http://www.malwarebytes.org It is currently the best maintained free scanner available. Skybot is another excellent program.

However NO scanner is perfect. Each uses different ways of defining and detecting spyware. So something that Malwarebyte does not classify as a spyware might be detected by Ad-aware, and vice versa.

Since spyware scanners do not run all the time like virus scanners, you can have two (or more) on your computer. I recommend getting BOTH Ad-aware (or Spybot) and Malwarebyte, and every time you scan your computer (which should be at least once a week) alternate between the two programs. Hopefully one program will find anything not detected by the other.
