What is the difference between spyware, adware and other malware?

All these programs have anti-spyware/malware/adware/virus confuse me. Can someone please explain what is the difference between them all or if it falls into the category of the other. Oh, and would they all be considered as virus or are they separate computer infections? = S Thank you in advance!

Spyware is software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user interaction with the computer, without the consent of the user. Adware or advertising-supported software is a software package which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertising to a computer after the software installed on it or the application is used. Some types of adware are also spyware and can be classified as intrusive software. Malware, a portmanteau of the words malicious and software, is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the consent of the owner. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety forms of hostile software, intrusive or annoying or program code. [1] The "computer virus" is sometimes used as a catch-all to include all types malware from, including true viruses. Software is considered malware based on the perceived intent of the creator rather than any special features. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkits and more, spyware, adware dishonest, crimeware and other malicious and unwanted software. In law, malware is sometimes known as a computer contaminant, for example in the legal codes of several states U.S., including California and West Virginia.
